I knew from the moment I first saw her she was the one. The only girl I could ever want.
The only girl I could ever love.
She is light.
I am darkness.
She is innocent.
I’ve done too much.
She is good.
I am bad.
She is my every dream.
I should be her every nightmare.
We come from different worlds. She’s…perfect. And I’m…
Not.Somehow she wants me anyway. So we’ll grasp at what we can. We’re going to make this summer count. She’s my secret. And I’m hers.
The problem with secrets is they never last for long. And when others discover we’re together, they’ll do whatever it takes to keep us apart. All I know is: I won’t let them.
Because Reverie Hale? She’s mine.
Monica Murphy has had great success with “One Week Girlfriend” and the series that resulted from the book. I read the series and enjoyed it, so I was really looking forward to “His Reverie.” And the jacket copy was cryptic and made me want to read the book and find out just what the issue was with this guy and his secret.
“When I started reading and realized the female main character, Reverie, was the daughter of a very strict evangelist. A famous television evangelist whose lifestyle was watched closely by his “flock.” I thought, “Yeah! This is going to be great.” Maybe a little scandal with the evangelist or an upset with the daughter and the “Almost” bad boy (you’ll have to read the book to know what that means—I’m not telling.)
Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. Oh, there was a secret romance and some tension came from that, but it fell flat quickly and turned into a back and forth of, “Does she love me? I don’t deserve her.” And “I love him so much. Does he love me?” This actually fit the characters at this stage of their life and what struggles they’d been through, but it went on too long for me. It pulled the pacing down considerably.
There was a blackmail effort and murder and that was great! Unfortunately, it didn’t pop up until the last few chapters. I think the author missed a great opportunity with that storyline. It would have created a lot of much need tension if the blackmail had started a lot earlier in the story.
BOTTOM LINE: I thought the book started off with a great idea, but veered off course. It was a good read if you like angst filled lovers, but beyond that, there wasn’t much tension. Some mechanics and pacing problems, but the author’s writing style is comfortable and easy to read. I’m not sure I would recommend this book. I would probably steer a reader to another one of Murphy’s titles.
