Synopsis

One night in college can change everything…

Away at college, Amy just wants one night alone without her high school sweetheart, Joe. So when he invites her to go to the library, she heads off on her own instead. How she ended up at a house party with the mysterious bad-boy Trevor is another story…

Joe so isn’t going to the library. He needs space from Amy, too, so he’s decided to rush a fraternity, to get back the swagger he had in high school. But it doesn’t take long for the brothers to invite him to the real rush here the beer is flowing and one particular girl has set her eyes on Joe.

Over the course of one wild night, both Amy and Joe will have to decide if their futures belong with two new people, or whether the next forever will have their first loves in it.

“The Next Forever” is a short companion novella to “Pretty Amy.” Although, you don’t have to read “Pretty Amy” before reading “The Next Forever,” I’d recommend it. I had not read “Pretty Amy” and there were times I would have liked more background information about the characters. I think if I had read the first book before reading this novella I would have been more invested in the characters. As it was, I didn’t have any emotional attachment to them.

I found the premise of the book irritating.  Two self-indulgent individuals lying to their “significant” other and then spending a night in various stages of cheating, depending on how one defines the act of cheating. I just couldn’t immerse myself in the story.

This is not to say that the writing style was bad—it wasn’t.  In fact, I quite enjoyed Lisa Burstein’s style of writing even though the story wasn’t for me.  Nor does my review of “The Next Forever” indicate my likelihood of reading additional work of Ms. Burstein’s. In fact, regardless of my opinion of this piece, I will most likely read additional work by this author. I’ve read her novel “Dear Cassie” and enjoyed it.

Bottom line: while there was nothing inherently wrong with “The Next Forever,” it just wasn’t for me. But I’m anxious to read Ms. Burstein’s future work.
