Synopsis

What happens in Aspen is definitely not staying in Aspen . . .

A girls' trip to Aspen was exactly what Shay needed to forget about her toxic ex-boyfriend. She's got her girls, pristine slopes for skiing, and hot guys everywhere. Of course, her epic self-rediscovery goes completely to hell when a wild (and deliciously hot) skier knocks Shay on her ass . . . and war is declared.

Kolton doesn't know what it is about Shay that makes him lose it. Not just his cool---although she does have an unholy gift for that---but his restraint. When anger gives way to explosive chemistry, they're both shaken with the intensity of it. But somewhere between lust and hate, Kolton and Shay realize they could have something real . . . if they don't kill each other first.

I’ve said before that I love beginning sentences (as a reader). As an author, I agonize over the first sentence to use when writing a novel. So much hinges on those first few words.

I loved the first sentence in My Perfect Mistake.

You can tell a lot about a woman by the type of bra she wears.

The bra scene was a great way to start the book. It really gives the reader a glimpse into Shay’s mind. I thought it was fun and it made me smile.

In fact, the entire book was fun. I don’t know if I’d call it a romantic comedy, but the writing definitely had me smiling a lot, and laughing out loud a few times, too. But it wasn’t all comedy, feel good fluff. No, the story had meat to it. There was a good blend of humor and romance and life lessons. I enjoyed it.

The plot of My Perfect Mistake is enjoyable. A down-on-her-luck protagonist who’s just coming off a bad relationship. A has-it-together leading man who’s rich, but has had his own fair share of lumps in life. It’s a story that’s been done before, and it’ll be done again. So in a bookstore filled with books with the same central plot outline, does the author make My Perfect Mistake stand out? Yes. I think she did. There was enough good writing, good scenes, and good world building to keep the story fresh.

The characters were fun and well-developed. I only had two issues. First, Shay was sometimes a little hard to swallow. I mean, she could be a brat at times. Even she had something to say about her behavior…

I’m so tired of myself and my excuses.

Yup. That sums it up.

To be fair, though, Shay had a tough go of it. I understood that and when you frame her behavior with the knowledge of how nasty The Dick (that’s what she calls her ex) did, it makes you understand her and forgive some of the groan-worthy, predictable behavior. I think if the reader was given more information up front about her past relationship, it would have made Shay a lot more tolerable.

That being said, I liked Shay. She wasn’t a horrible character in the least.

Kolton was all kinds of yummy.

Toned and taut and rising in plump perfection, glistening in the warm light. The Sistine Chapel of butts.

‘Nuff said. He was smexy. But he was also a character who had depth.

Secondary characters were included, but used, in my opinion, as props rather than given a valuable part in the plot. I liked the secondary characters. Maybe that’s why I craved a little more interaction with them.

The writing was solid. I didn’t find any glaring mistakes. I enjoyed the dual POVs. There were some formatting issues that made it hard to follow some passages. Texts sent between characters and internal dialogue weren’t italicized and made parts of the story confusing. But I was reading an ARC, so the formatting issues might be corrected on the finished copy.

Bottom line: Totally worth the time. A feel-good romance that’s cliff-hanger free and includes a HEA? Yeah, sign me up. My Perfect Mistake is part of the Over the Top Series by Kelly Siskind. It’s the first I’ve read, but I can guarantee it won’t be the last! I completely recommend it.

This sounds like fun! Though here’s my thing: what is it with the “we hate each other” “no, we love each other” thing lately? I kind of don’t think a relationship that starts of with two people at each other’s throats would work all that well. It makes me think of being in third grade where boys that liked you were mean to you. Maybe I’m just too old for that kind of game 🙂

I know what you mean. It’s done A LOT, and it doesn’t alway work. In this book, though… I think it did. I mean, you have to read how they meet to understand why they are irritated with each other. It’s kind of funny… sorta.

But, I agree with you that, in most cases, it’s third-grade mentality and isn’t usually conducive to a lasting, loving relationship.
