Synopsis

She's no Sleeping Beauty. And he's definitely no prince . . .

Margot McCleery could have lived her whole life without seeing Bentley Wellington again-her ex-best friend and the poster boy for Hot, Rich Man-Whores everywhere. But Margot's whiskey-augmented grandmother "buys" Bentley at a charity bachelor auction, and now suddenly he's at her door. Impossibly charming. Impossibly sexy. And still a complete and utter jackass.

Bentley's just been coerced by his grandfather to spend the next thirty days charming and romancing the reclusive red-haired beauty who hates him. The woman he abandoned when she needed him the most. Bentley knows just as much about romance as he knows about love-nothing. But the more time he spends with Margot, the more he realizes that "just friends" will never be enough. Now all he has to do is convince her to trust him with her heart . . .

I’m not shy about getting all fangirlish over Rachel Van Dyken. I love her romantic comedies. They never fail to put a smile on my face, no matter what my mood. But her newest release—The Playboy Bachelor—this book… This Book, people, is a game changer. If you haven’t read it, you need to. If you’ve never read a Van Dyken book… make this your first.

The Playboy Bachelor is layered with snarky bits of dialogue to the depths of emotional pain, and everything in between. I loved Margot. She’s strong but doesn’t know it. It takes a push for her to really figure it out. She’s damaged, and I don’t mean in the way people can “see” (read the book and you’ll understand). Her life has dealt her a series of blows, and while we may not be able to relate to some of her problems, readers will be able to relate to Margot. She’s everything a good character should be: layered, relatable, likable, and someone readers want to root for.

Bentley… well, to be honest, I wasn’t sure if I’d like him. I did something I usually don’t do with Van Dyken’s books: I read the synopsis before I read the book. It’s not that I intentionally Don’t read the jacket copy of her books. It’s just that I don’t need to. Like I mentioned above… I’m a fan. I enjoy Van Dyken’s writing. But, Bentley sounded like an ass in the synopsis. And, truthfully, as much as I love a good bad-boy-redemption story, I just wasn’t in the mood. If the book had been written by another author I probably wouldn’t have read it (at that point in time). But, I did. And I’m glad. Because there was so much more to Bentley than the typical rich-bad-boy-type. I felt his pain and guilt and his all-consuming need to redeem himself. Not because he wanted to right a wrong. Although, I think that was part of it, but because he FELT something for the first time in his adult life. He was kind of like the Grinch—until Margot, his heart was two sizes too small. Like Margot’s character, Bentley was awesomely written and I liked him…damn it.

The story line was just awesome. I wish I could think of a better word. I mean, I should be able to—I’m an author. But, awesome is the word. Maybe, terrific? Or, get-a-copy-of-this-book-now? Okay, that’s seven words, but whatever. The plot was… yes… awesome. In my opinion, it’s one of Rachel Van Dyken’s best books. There was so much emotion poured into the pages. It dripped from them. (No! I’m not telling you the plot. Read the book. Besides, this is a book that NEEDS to be read first hand, not regurgitated in a review.)

Bottom line: In case you didn’t get it from all the “awesomes” I used in my review—I really enjoyed The Playboy Bachelor. It dealt with real problems and real situations. Ones we can all relate to on some level. The novel had depth, angst, sexual tension—just layers upon layers of emotion. The characters and story drew me in from the very first page and I would have finished the book in one sitting, but my family (I love them) kept interrupting me! (I love them, seriously, I do, but I need a “do not disturb” sign to hang from my books while reading.) It wasn’t the typical rom-com I generally expect from Van Dyken, but it was sweet and sexy, and oh, so good!

Get a copy! Seriously, it’s good, people. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

I can totally understand the not being in the mood for a bad boy turned good story. It’s often not done well, and quite frankly, bad boys are NOT my thing, even in books. (Gah, just read one where I was like “wtf? The man is an A$$–why would you be with him???” Hehe!) So yeah, I’m glad this managed to work out well. Definitely gonna check it out!
