Synopsis

The past will always find you.
Jos Archer was the girl with the perfect life; until the night it all came crashing down around her. Now, nine months later, she still hasn't begun to pick up the pieces. Even transferring to a new college and living under the watchful eye of her older sister, Renee, isn't enough to help her feel normal again.
And then she meets Dusty Sharp. For reasons Jos can't begin to fathom, the newly reformed campus bad boy seems determined to draw her out of her shell. And if she's not careful, his knowing green eyes and wicked smile will make her feel things she's no longer sure she deserves.
But even as Dusty coaxes Jos to open up about the past, he's hiding secrets of his own. Secrets about the night her old life fell apart. When the truth is finally revealed, will it bring them closer together;or tear them apart for good?

“My Sweetest Escape” is the second book in the My Favorite Mistake series. “My Favorite Mistake” was the first book in the series. I’ve read both books. If you’ve read “My favorite Mistake,” and liked it, you’ll probably like “My Sweetest Escape.” Although the plots are quite different, the writing style and format are very similar.

I liked the book. I didn’t love it, though. I think there was some disconnect between the characters and how they acted and treated each other. I didn’t find it particularly believable. Renee’s character especially, Jos coming in a close second. That was a problem for me throughout the book.

I think the plot was well thought out. I could get on board with a girl drastically changing her personality after what happened (nope, not telling…read the book!). And I can see her parents sending her to stay with her sister to college because they were worried about her. That all made perfect sense and was logical. But something just didn’t ring true about the whole thing. And, again, I think it goes back to the characterization of Renee and Jos. And then throw in everyone else sneaking around spying on Jos making sure she doesn’t screw up. I mean, Mase sitting in the dark guarding the door? Come on! And Dusty appointed as her personal spy. I just thought that was a little over the top. Sure, they’d keep an eye on her and be there to help if she needed it, but I had trouble with everyone being so over the top about it.

I loved Dusty’s character. A reformed bad boy. Who’s got it going on both in the head and the body…smexy’s the word. And he was. Why he stayed around Jos when she gave him such a hard time I couldn’t figure out, but that boy had it bad for her. How she could resist him for so long beat the heck outta me. He was gorgeomus maximus. (Yes, they’re real words.)

Hannah was a secondary character, but she was great. I loved her. She had a personality with some snark mixed with humor and an emotional, self-esteem side. She also had some baggage of her own to carry and that made her feel so real. She was a great addition to the story and I think Chelsea hit a high with her character. I think Dusty and Hannah saved the book for me. They were both great characters and I loved almost every scene they were in.

I liked the writing style. It was easy to read and flowed well. The pacing was a little slow, especially at the beginning of the book when Jos just wanted to “hide out.” It picked-up near the end, however. I quite liked the big “Surprise” ending. It was different than most books. Overall I think this was an enjoyable book. It was exactly what I expected from Ms. Cameron, and then some. I look forward to reading more of her work!

Bottom Line: I’d recommend “My Sweetest Escape,” especially to someone who liked the first book in the series. It was a good read and the character growth in Jos was great to follow along with. If you like Ms. Cameron’s writing, you’ll love this book. She sticks to her roots and what makes her books stand out.
