A to Z Challenge: K

K is for Keeping Fit.

No, I’m not going to write about exercise again.  I’m writing about keeping our minds fit.  What do we do that exercises our brains.

Yes, writing exercises our minds, but what do we do to exercise FOR writing?

Reading is one thing I do.  I read a lot.  Lately I’ve been doing book reviews for other authors.  I’ve read a lot of really good books while reviewing…some not so great, too.  But I keep reading.  I read mostly YA urban fantasy and science fiction because that’s what I write.  Lately I’ve been reading dystopian (my newly discovered genre) and paranormal.

Another thing I read is craft books.  Not craft as in making little furry animals out of pipe cleaners.  No, I’m talking about books on writing.  One of my favorites is “Hooked” by Les Edgerton.  I’ve read it before – I’m rereading it now.  He has a lot of great advice and he delivers it with a dose of humor.

Do you read books on writing?  What’s your favorite?  What do you do to exercise your mind?

On Writing by Stephen King and Self-editing for Fiction Writers (suggested to me by my editor) written by Browne & King.

Good post to remind us to keep mentally fit.

I love the self-editing for Fiction Writers. I have that one. Of course, editing your own work is hard regardless of how many books we read.

How do you do that? Do you have a method – like what speed readers do? My husband is the SLOWEST reader. I think he would enjoy reading a lot more if he could improve his speed and comprehension.

I do an online crossword to exercise my mind. I only started recently because I was doing online Soduku, and it occurred to me that as a writer I should be doing word things rather than number things.

I used to read books about writing, but I found they all said exactly the same thing, and I used to disagree anyway!

I do find that a lot of writing books say the same thing. lol! I guess there is only so much one can write about writing. 🙂 There are some suggestions/ideas that I don't agree with. I tend to ignore them and move on to what I find useful.

Believe it or not, I'm trying to do both at once! I go to the gym with my kindle because the machines are mind-numbingly boring. Also, you can adjust the font really big so you can read it while bouncing around or whatever. Anyway, I just finished Stephen King's "On Writing" which was excellent, and am about to start "Bird On Bird" by Anne Lamont (I think), many people have recommended it.

I thinks it's great to read and work on the machines! I use my book shelf on my treadmill all the time. I just prop my kindle up there and away I go.

I've heard about "Bird On Bird" but I haven't looked into it yet.
