R is for Remembering

I was recently asked to do a guest post on “Why I Write.”  Of course the first thing that came to mind was the fame and fortune I’ve received (kidding!)  Seriously, it made me sit down and take a good look at some of the reasons I decided to become a writer and most of them stemmed from memories I had growing up.

Memories are powerful things.  Good ones are, well, good.  But bad ones can be worse than bad.  Luckily for me I’ve been fortunate throughout my life.  My good memories have outweighed the bad, especially when it comes to reading and writing.

I remember going to my grandma’s house on the weekends to spend the night.  We’d go shopping at the mall and out to lunch at our favorite restaurant.  Then we’d do something REALLY fun.  We’d go to the library!  And so my love of books began.  The Nancy Drew mysteries and Where The Red Fern Grows were my favorites.  I remember crying reading Where the Red Fern Grows…still do.

Saturday morning my grandma would make blueberry waffles (the frozen kind – she wasn’t much of a cook) and orange juice for breakfast and we’d read. There’d be no television on, no Saturday morning cartoons.  Just soft, soothing instrumental music from my grandmother’s era playing in the background as we poured over our books.  And I loved it.

I remember it like it was just last weekend.  I miss it.

I made some great memories those weekends.  Memories I’ll always carry with me.  But I didn’t only make good memories, I was given an appreciation and love for books – for the worlds they could take us to, the people they could introduce us to.  And from the love of books grew a love of writing.

So what are some of your memories of reading/writing? What new ones would you like to make?  Me?  I’d like to make Saturday morning reading more fun than cartoons for my children and future grandchildren, just like my grandma did for me.

Hi – I found your blog from the A to Z challenge. What's cool about the blogging community is finding so many other people who loved the library as kids (and now) and don't think it's strange to want to spend a weekend tucked away reading. My best friend hardly read unless it was for school, one thing that we just didn't connect on.

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond – strep throat has kept me down for a couple of days. I love meeting people on line. I've met some really great ones through the challenge.

My best friend and I were the same way. I always had a book – she never did! lol!

          Thanks for commenting!

That's a great memory! Reading was my first love – I couldn't get enough. Sometimes my parents had to make me go outside and play. They thought I was a strange child wanting to sit inside and read all the time.

They are great memories. I'm so glad I have them. My grandmother has passed away – eleven years now. But her memories live on.

          Michelle 🙂
